Turner Engineering Group (TEG) is a construction-focused Professional Engineering and Architectural team providing innovative solutions for design-related challenges.

Position Description: Analyze and evaluate building materials
and systems (such as: waterproofing, insulation, concrete) to
provide recommendations for innovative and sustainable solutions. Recommendations
should consider supply chain challenges, budget impacts and the overall company
risk exposure.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

  • Serve as subject matter expert and advisor to the business for matters related to material science.
  • Perform technical reviews of projects related to building materials and systems (such as: waterproofing, insulation, concrete), examine design details and provide alternative, sustainable, long term recommendations to project specifications and design drawings.
  • Propose potential alternative solutions to the design & construction team for design optimization, challenges, and constructability improvements.
  • Collaborate with our Design Partners to understand design intent when proposing options of alternate building materials and products.
  • Conduct product and technology research into industry innovation related to materials and material interactions to incorporate into design details.
  • Identify products, materials and equipment components and/or other areas of innovation for further development.
  • Provide subject matter expertise and assist in the development of training programs to expand building science principles, new technologies and green building program requirements to TEG colleagues and business units.
  • Establish relationships with internal/external project team members, subcontractors, and clients to facilitate understanding and influence material evaluation to improve outcome of material performance.
  • Coordinate with various professional design team disciplines throughout design and construction phases.
  • Partner with design disciplines, e.g. geotechnical, structural, code-compliance, building envelope and façade, MEFP to improve the coordination of design concepts
  • Manage and determine if specific solutions require further 3rd party testing and analysis, and if so, identify proper firms to coordinate in the advancement of product and material solutions and options.
  • Identify and participate in industry groups that will allow the company to develop additional knowledge in material science.
  • Collaborate with universities with materials science and engineering programs to ensure the company is up to date on the use of current and new materials.
  • Works closely with representatives of Business Development, Procurement, the project Teams and the Innovation Group to collaborate on the use of new materials.

  • Qualifications:

    • Bachelor’s degree in Materials Engineering, Chemistry or Science or related field and minimum of 10 years of experience working directly in material science roles, or equivalent combination of education and experience
    • Knowledge in the construction field and a comprehension of construction disciplines and basic execution of a project from end-to-end preferred.
    • Must have the ability to think and write in a highly structured manner while also having the required creativity to develop specialized solutions and anticipate potential challenges and opportunities.
    • Enjoy working in an interdisciplinary team environment.
    • Experience in developing specialized solutions and anticipating potential challenges and opportunities
    • Maintain continued expert knowledge and awareness of innovations and new materials in material science in construction
    • Cross-functional knowledge of key engineering disciplines (Architectural, Structural, MEP/ HVAC etc.) and relevant trades
    • Ability to develop specialized solutions and anticipate potential challenges and opportunities
    • Able to effectively and clearly communicate in a professional environmental via verbal and written means.
