The City of Renton is recruiting for Parks Laborer seasonal positions to assist with maintaining City parks. This position may work up to a six-month duration between April - October, working up to 40 hours per week. There are several positions available and we are looking for hard working individuals who enjoy being outdoors and performing physical labor. This is a continuous application pool which means that during the season (April 1 - October 31), as positions become available, the hiring manager may review applications we have received.
 
JOB SUMMARY:
Under the direction of an assigned supervisor, perform semi-skilled and skilled work in a variety of maintenance trades.
 
SUPERVISION:
Reports To: Parks Maintenance Supervisor and/or Lead Parks Maintenance Worker
Supervises: None
 
ESSENTIAL JOB RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Operate a variety of maintenance equipment and tools such as sod cutters, pruners, rotary hand mowers, backpack blowers, edgers, weed eaters and park vehicles; clean and perform routine maintenance on equipment and tools.
  • Prepare parks for daily use, including, but not limited to, picking up trash and garbage; and cleaning picnic areas, play and park equipment, restrooms, tables, and BBQs.
  • Perform routine ball field maintenance, including but not limited to, filling in home plates and pitching mounds, removing rain water from fields, screening fields, watering ball fields, lining ball fields, placing bases at proper distances for games or practices, and removing bases at end of games.
  • Close park facilities; restock and close restrooms; lock park gates.
  • Prep surfaces for painting; paint walls, fences, buildings and other facilities.
  • Aide in sprinkler system repair, including but not limited to, checking for proper head rotation and assisting in digging trenches for repairs.
  • Prepare and grade terrain; apply fertilizers; seed and sod lawns; weed planting areas; transplant shrubs and plants; trim and edge around walks and flower beds; prune shrubs and trees; mow and trim lawns.
  • Assist with boat launch operations at Gene Coulon Park to help boat patrons. Direct traffic in boat launch area; communicate park rules and assist lifeguards during emergencies.

EXPERIENCE/SKILLS/CERTIFICATIONS:
  • Ability to operate and maintain standard tools and equipment used in a variety of maintenance trades.
  • Knowledge of health and safety practices, regulations and procedures.
  • Knowledge of basic construction trades.
  • Basic math skills.
  • Must possess a valid Washington State Driver's License. If under 18 years old an intermediate driver's license and driving for six months is required.
  • Successful passing of a driving record check that is approved by the Risk Management division. 
  • Successful passing of a required background check.

WORK ENVIRONMENT/PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
The following represent the physical demands that must be met to successfully perform the essential functions of this job:
  • Majority of work is consistently performed outdoors in all weather conditions, and involves moving throughout the facilities.
  • Lift or move items weighing up to 50 pounds on occasion.
  • May work a variety of shift schedules, special events and holidays.
